WHAT IS A HOVERCRAFT

What is a Hovercraft:
A Hovercraft, also known as an Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) or Surface Effect Vehicle (SEV), is a machine that rides on a cushion of air. A fan provides air to lift the craft whilst propulsion/thrust is normally provided through a prop or fan (fan has multiple blades). The skirt is used to contain the air under the craft providing a flexible seal on uneven ground and water.
Hovercraft are fully amphibious and range in size from single seat racing crafts up to 300 tonne military giants as well as the huge Hovercraft that used to carry cars, trucks and passengers across the English Channel.

In the light Hovercraft catergory there is a huge variety of designs ranging from small home built cruisers through to factory built crafts or high powered racing crafts. Crafts can be purchased second hand, built from plans or kits at home or purchased fully assembled and ready to fly from Hovercraft manufacturers.
The hovercraft's unique ability to fly over many surfaces with near zero friction and a very small amount of ground contact at speeds of up to 70 kph makes for a very exhilarating experience.

The Hovercraft Club:
Consists of a group of Hover Enthusiasts that own a range of different Hovercraft twin engine craft, single engine single fan as well as single engine twin fan crafts, they are powered by a variety of different engines single cylinder motors, rotary engines, twin cylinder 2 strokes and Subaru car engines.

The aim of the club is to promote the safe use of light hovercraft for recreation and sport as well as helping builders to produce safe and practical crafts, we are also encouraging schools to build small hovers to help teach students a wide range of practial and enjoyable skills and let them enjoy the thrill of low level flying.

Through the clubs members we have many years of experience in design and construction of small hovercraft and can help new builders with plenty of information on what to do and what not to do.
